I would like to see the Packers *not* make the playoffs this year. I'm anti-cheering for them. Also the Patriots, but realistically, I think both make it. Patriots because they're the Patriots and Packers because they're NFC North and somebody's gotta win that division, might as well be them.

Yeah... they did go, all right... Eventually, the Bills will keep their top draft picks. One day...
Speaking of keeping top draft picks, Tampa Bay has some egg on its face regarding its just-released kicker...

Head coach and GM... Bills are as bad as the Browns, in those regards. Gotta have stability at the top to build a real dynasty.
I now propose a thoroughly uninformed round-up of all the teams in the NFL, followed by a Super Bowl pick that will be, at best, 50% accurate, which is what most sports writers do, anyway... :P
CLEVELAND BROWNS: I think they're gonna suck this year. Do not expect them to win many games, and that may be an understatement.
CHICAGO BEARS: These guys need more than just a change at quarterback to be effective. Expectations set at a low, low, low level for this team.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: Are they all back, again? I guess they'll be in the Super Bowl again, unless the Steelers can stop them.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS: Please, please, PLEASE beat the Patriots.
TMQ is back. I'm one of the guys that likes Easterbrook's style, even if there are those of the "Gregg Easterbrook is a pompous dipshit" school.

Football roundtable question one: will the Bengals choke in the playoffs again, or will they even make it this year?
I think they will make it but choke as usual lol.

Agreed. In the AFC, I'm picking Patriots, Houston, Raiders, and Steelers as division champs. Bengals get to flame out as a wild card and my other wild card pick will be the Chiefs.
In the NFC, my div champ picks are Cowboys, Packers, Falcons, and Cardinals. Wild cards are Seahawks and Giants.
should we setup a football pick'em group somewhere? not fantasy, don't have time for all that, but just a simple pick the winners every week? I think yahoo, or fox, cbs or espn should have has something like that.
We should. I'm not a fantasy guy myself. I just like to pick the winners in each game and thereby discover where the close matches between top teams are - those are the best games to watch. A pick 'em between Cleveland and Jacksonville? Pass. A toss-up between the Steelers and the Texans? Yes, please!
who's in ?
do we all have yahoo accounts?
last thing I need is another login to manage....
Wait, what? Yahoo accounts? I think I missed something... we can just do a pick 'em here, can't we?

it's called 'flag football' that's where I predict it will end up, either that most will quit the league due to the head injury issue, and others will not follow into the sport for the same reason. the leagues will eventually fold when there are not enough players. This scenario probably won't happen, there always some fool with dollars in their eyes not to care enough about their health for money. I read some time ago that the average life span of a NFL football player is something like 53.
Soo... People wonder why I am depressed.
In 2016, the bills got Reggie Ragland.
We traded up to get him. To get him we gave up a 49th overall pick (2nd round), and a 117th (4th round) pick to move up to the 41st overall pick (2nd round).
WE JUST TRADED HIM AFTER 1 YEAR OF INJURY AND 1 BAD MINICAMP FOR A 2019!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4TH ROUND PICK

Ouch. Meanwhile, there's Dak Prescott getting picked up in the bottom half of the draft, making clubs all over the land kick themselves that they didn't draft him sooner... But, really, I've always seen the draft not as an opportunity to find the next Johnny Manziel, but as a chance to get lots of cheap talent and then try it out on the field to see how the puzzle pieces fit together. More pieces, more chances of finding fits.
If there's stability in the coaching and management, then there's dynasty building going on. The best clubs have the most stable staffs. Look at Pittsburgh and New England and Green Bay. Dallas is getting there again, with Jason Garrett being the first coach in a long time to be a coach with a long time at that club.

I saw Harbaugh got a year extension, go Ravens.
Meanwhile, the 49ers are the Bills and Browns of the NFC, combined.
OK, Patriots vs. Chiefs tonight. Should be a good game if the Chiefs do their part and step up to the challenge. I have no doubt that the Patriots will do all they can to play great football, those guys are a machine.
Wow, Chiefs won that contest, 42-27. The Patriots lost Amendola which really hurt their offense with Edelmann also on the sidelines. But what really left them vulnerable was Hightower going out of the game: Patriots defense just fell apart after that and KC's Hunt showed how he shakes off the worst. start. ever.
That guy Hunt was amazing to watch, he is going to be on the radar for rookie of the year if he keeps up performance like that. KC QB Smith showed some good strengths and the KC defense was able to halt those crucial 3rd and 4th down conversion attempts, which shut down those Patriot drives and kept the momentum going for the KC offense.
The sacks of Brady at the end were bad, bad news for New England. I don't care how old or young the QB is or what kind of shape he's in, there's no hope for a QB if his front line can't keep the defense from knocking him over. Hits on a QB are always risky affairs, since you never know when the guy is going to get up after a hit or if he's going to limp off the field to have that collarbone checked out. If that front line just needs conditioning so it doesn't lose gas in the 4th quarter, that's good news for the Patriots. If the Chiefs figured out some vulnerabilities to exploit, that's going to come out in the film and future Patriots opponents may see the same things.
This is where the security guy in me starts to pay attention to the games. If a player can't move in a certain way or falls for a certain feint time and again or if he gives away information by the way he lines up or takes a stance, that's a vulnerability. A good coach and a good player see that vulnerability and then come up with a plan on how to pop that sploit. Then it's up to the coach of the exploited player or players to see the same thing and then get that thing to change so it's not a vulnerability any more.
Belichik is great at noticing vulnerabilities on his own team and in his opponents. Andy Reid of the Chiefs is no slouch, either. I think the story here is that Reid figured out some flaw in the Pats' front line late in the game and Belichik won't have time to correct until he gets his team back together to study film. That's too late for last night's game, but will be in time for the next one.
More serious for the Patriots is the disruption in their defense with Hightower's absence. I didn't expect his absence to be such a big deal, but it was. Oh boy, it was. If Hightower is back next week, the Patriots have some breathing room to work on defense. If not, then Dan Patricia will have some rocket science to do, and in a hurry.
Good news out of this game: everyone talking about a 19-0 Patriots season will now shut up. :smug:
Reflections on yesterday's action:
1. Jacksonville didn't just win, it steamrollered Houston. JACKSONVILLE? WTF???
2. Pittsburgh won, but had a tight game against Cleveland. CLEVELAND? WTF???
3. Seattle, Green Bay, Dallas, and the Giants have monster defenses.
3a. Green Bay and Dallas have offenses that can find the way to make things work in breaking through those monster defenses.
3b. 3-and-out is no way to win against monster defenses - Seattle and Giants have some work to do with their offenses.
4. Eagles and the Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous Persons have poor offensive front lines. They are going to suffer for that.
4a. Mr. Cousins would be well advised to avoid tossing the long bombs until after he's got the front line in place that will enable him to do the Full Aaron Rogers. Rogers can do what he does because his front line does what it does.
4b. Eagles got a lot of their points off of the PDBIP sloppy offense giving up the ball. Eagles need to figure out how to score on guys that aren't as sloppy, or they will suffer.
5. Cowboys need to make sure their running game can survive Elliott getting suspended. Look what happened to the Giants' passing game with Beckham on the side. If the big threat isn't suited up, then the defense doesn't have to divert resources to try to shut that player down.

I agree GB will win and that score looks pretty reasonable, given how solid GB's defense is. Atlanta looks like it needs to get its act together. That game against Chicago should not have been that close.
Well, GB did *not* win... Atlanta looked very strong, as did Denver. Dallas just could not figure out how to stop all those Denver attacks and Denver's line shut down Elliott from the start.
Washington must have spent the week watching film... they managed a win on the Rams.
The LA Mustards beat the SFO Barbecue Sauces last night. I do NOT like those color rush uniforms. NFL needs to quit being gimmicky and should start having coaches go for it on 4th and short to generate more excitement. Also just do away with the kickoff after a score and just start on the 25... unless the scoring team wants to do an onside kick. Or just make all kickoffs after a score into onside kicks, that would be pretty dang exciting.
But no more color rush uniforms, please. Those things are ugly.
Ristau and I had a TERRIBLE time with our picks this weekend. Out of 14 games, we only called the result in 7 of them.
:zomgwtfbbq:
This is not us simply failing to understand the sport - this is some major unexpected results happening. The fact that our calls on the Patriots and Green Bay came down to final seconds and overtime coming true is even more how unexpected things were this week. I need to adjust my thinking accordingly when I make my week 4 picks...
I mean, JACKSONVILLE BEAT BALTIMORE... BY A LOT... who, if anyone, saw *that* coming?
How I feel about my pick 'em results from last week:
:oracle:
yeah, I picekd alot of favorites, would never have picked the jags to have the highest score of all the games. (unless something goes horrible wrong with the cowboys). Balto game was sad. they even took out Flacco to protect him from injury, at least then they scored a TD
I watched the Pats-Texans game and could not believe how Brady pulled that winning TD out of thin air. Likewise for Aaron Rogers beating the Bengals. I know we picked both the Pats and Packers to win, but I don't think either of us thought the games would be as close as they were.
Moral of this story: If there is still time on the clock, the Pats and Packers can still win. Never mind what lead you have, they can still win.
***
In other news, the MMQB has anointed that Chicago cornerback as the Goat of the Week, and rightly so. He ran a blocked kick back for what he thought would be a touchdown, then slowed down on the 1-yard line and a Steeler came up from behind and knocked the ball out of his hand.
Moral of THAT story: don't be cute on the 1-yard line. Be cute *after* the touchdown is scored.
Game to watch this sunday: Bills vs Falcons.
On an important side note: Cowboys won. Now if they can beat a team with a winning record, they'll really have something...
Bills v Falcons could be quite interesting, the Bills are doing all they can to not be a write-off team this year, and I'm starting to take notice. Other games that should have some general interest because of the quality of the matchups would include Detroit at Minnesota, Tennessee at Houston, and - the big one - Oakland at Denver. Of course, given all the upsets of last week, who's to say which teams are guaranteed to do anything?
Looks like the thunderstorm is winning in the game between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Chipmunks.
The rain will help wash away the stink that the Chicago offense is giving off. Horrible performance from those guys.

Yeah, GB is going to be a big question mark in its running game for a while, for sure.
But I think they can win more games than Chicago, because Aaron Rogers.
Another week of crazy in which it becomes apparent that there are quite a few teams this year that aren't doing what they did last year.
Case in point: Buffalo Bills. I know I called them "the other Cleveland". Now they're riding high, atop the AFC East. This is an exciting, if difficult to predict, season.
Sad to see my local team struggling on offense. Looks like more than one team decided to shore up its run defense, so Dak better learn how to throw to Dez, and soon.
On the PAC-12 front Washington and Washington State are both 5-0. If they keep it up it will make for an interesting Apple Cup.

I read "Apple Cup" and thought of a logo'd championship before I made the connection between Washington and actual, for-reals, chomp them crunchy fruits, *apples*.
Tampa v New England last night was waaaaaaay too close. Tampa was essentially beating itself with 3 missed FGs and some pretty sloppy offense, but the Patriots were right back in the mess by giving away yards in penalties, letting Brady get knocked around because of a porous offensive line, and some uncoordinated plays of their own. Patriots should have been in command of the situation last night, according to preseason expectations. They weren't and that's why there needs to be a serious review of the situation back in Foxboro.
Tampa Bay needs to do something about the kicker. Right now, those 9 points he missed put him in serious contention for Worst of the Week.
Aaron Rodgers has made a pact with the devil. I swear, he's made a pact with the devil. They were down, with just over a minute left in the game. You'd think they were beat...

:zomgwtfbbq:
There goes my theory about things getting more predictable...
I'm not the only one having fits. Quoth Peter King of MMQB:
Usually, six weeks into the season, we've got a pretty good idea of what's what in the NFL. After six weeks: New England was the best team in the AFC last year and went on to win the Super Bowl; Denver and Carolina were unbeaten in 2015 and went on to meet in the Super Bowl; Seattle and Denver were a combined 11-1 in 2013, and they met in the big one.
This year? If Week 6 records mean the most, it looks like Alex Smith and Carson Wentz meeting in the Super Bowl in Minnesota in 16 weeks.
This season is just plain weird.

The last two weeks of more underdogs winning than favorites has been a crazy mess...
On the one hand, the game last night was insane. How many times did they have to run a last and final play? Lost count.
On the other hand, KC WAS SUPPOSED TO WIN, DAMMIT! Looks like Eric Carr is back and ready to QB and that means more mess ahead in picking winners... it's like the teams this year are highly competitive, more so than usual. Just about all the games are coming down to the wire or are massive surprises. So far, Cleveland is the only constant this season.

The results so far from this week are... insane... of the teams that looked like they had a lock on their games, 4 of them totally fell through, in particular the KC Chiefs. I'm glad that the Cowboys beat them, even though I picked KC to win, but the Cowboys weren't *supposed* to be *that* good...
And who knew that the EAGLES would be the team farthest out in front? Not me, man...
Yay Thanksgiving week for being much more predictable in the lineups.
Now to watch out if Garappolo starts for the 49ers... man's got some skills.
Also, Denver should hire Kapernick. They NEED a QB, and they need one NOW.

Well, one of them had to win, from the looks of things. From the looks of the lineups this week, I'm expecting more confusion in the wildcard race in the NFC after this week when the top wild card possibilities face up against the biggest gorillas out there. I don't have much hope for Atlanta against Minnesota and a similar lack of hope for Seattle against Philadelphia. Losses for both those teams can help Dallas towards a wild card slot, but can't do anything to help Dallas actually *win* a wild card game.

Yeah, last week turned out to be... predictable... Although I thought I'd messed up on the CIN-PIT pick when I went to bed last night and it was still 20-10 in CIN's favor. That was one brutal, brutal game. Seems wrong to even call it a "game", more like a series of organized muggings.

So did Carson Wentz... that's so Philly for ya. Clinches division title, closer to home field advantage through the NFC playoffs... and it may all mean nothing if they're depending upon Foles to be the QB that beats Brady (or Roethlisberger) in the Super Bowl... after surviving through all the playoffs...

Came right down to the end on that one, as did the Cowboys-Raiders game. Carolina's win was unexpected, but nevertheless fun to watch.
BTW, Ristau, the 49ers have a QB now. Watch for them to win a lot more often with the guy they got under center. That kid is hot.
Cowboys are knocked out of the playoffs because they decided to give 3 touchdowns to Seattle.
Never, NEVER spot the opposition three big scores. That's a tip for all you young people, looking to get ahead in life.
The Seattle defense (and Cowboy penalties) won that game for them. Bryant also just had a real bad day. So now if Seattle can win one more, and the Panthers can beat the Ravens then Seattle will be in the playoffs.
We also had the best play of the year this weekend when the Saints Lattimore caught an interception with his butt. Then to top it off there was the butt fumble from the Falcons in the same game.

I like the Saints' chances in the postseason. Eagles looked disappointing vs. Oakland, and that's not a good way to go into the playoffs with home field advantage.

i got one game back, 13 correct to your 12, not gonna make up the difference though unless you pick all losers, your picks have been pretty good this season. I could have been much closer but I started to pick upsets to make up some ground and didn't pick winners
I've also been pretty good at picking the Texas 2A High School games. I got a friend that does my yard who's over 80 and he always calls me up to get scores for these games that the local paper doesn't write about.
It's a long story, but the net is that I read up on football so we can have some fun conversations. The knock-on is that I also get to have a potential "in" with customers where the staff follows the games.
Tell you what though, of all the upsets I didn't pick this week, I think the 49ers might be one that happens. Garropolo has really brought that team together.
We only got 6 games picked right yesterday. While it's common for teams heading into the playoffs to take it easy and send out the second stringers for week 17, there were some uncomfortable signs... Philadelphia, in particular. That was a team that needed Foles to keep things together, get more snaps with the team, and get the system together. That didn't happen, and I'm very concerned about them lasting in the playoffs.
49ers beat the Rams because they got a legit QB. Watch out for them next year, they're gonna be hot.
Pittsbugh is my other worry: they've been so inconsistent this year, and they nearly lost to Cleveland yesterday. CLEVELAND.

and the ravens, oh ravens, had that game... and it was all on them. They sure didn't play like a playoff team 1st half, but were looking good in the second, it they had played in the first half like they did in the second half, they'd have won that game easily.
Hanging up my Ravens hat for the year. Rooting for the underdog Bills, who haven't even seen the playoffs since 1999.
Here's hoping the Bills don't get all lost in "WE MADE THE PLAYOFFS" euphoria and forget how to focus.
This is also where statistics gets really brutal. In the wild card games, the stats favor the teams with the best W-L record overall, so I'm picking those guys to win.
In the Divisional round, it's the home team that wins 3 out of 4 times. I believe that New England, Pittsburgh, and Minnesota will do the job. I think Philadelphia falters if the Rams beat the Falcons, and I think they will.

My ability to win this contest is no longer possible even if you picked every loser through the playoffs, I concede, good job dean. it was lots of fun though.
One thing I learned for sure: NEVER BET ON FOOTBALL.
Second thing I learned for sure: NEVER EVER BET ON PRE-SEASON GAMES OR WEEK 17 GAMES.
Anybody who thought, on January 2, that the Eagles would win the Super Bowl is a liar.
But what a finish to the season! I truly did not expect the Eagles to knock down the Falcons and the Vikings... and then to tear up the Patriots like they did.
Pats join the 600 club... teams that get over 600 yards of total offense and then *lose*. Wow.
And is it just me, or was the backup QB coaching a team that had a play in which a guy who was once a backup QB threw the ball to the current backup QB for a touchdown? Sweet, sweet play for the Eagles at the end of the second half.
Brady only had one sack in the game, but it was important and telling. Brady was mortal like everyone else after that.
Very glad to see that the referees did NOT call back any touchdowns. There was a review and guys in the announcer booth may have been going, "Mmmmmm... looks like it miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight get called back...", but unless there is clear, incontrovertible evidence to overturn, the play should not be overturned. Gene Steratore is my favorite referee, and that actually goes back to 2013, when Peter King followed him around for the MMQB column. It was a great series about officiating, and I started to watch that part of the game more after that series. Gene Steratore's the man, and I always feel good about the officiating when he's in charge of a game.
Philly played the game like Parcell's Giants: RUN THAT BALL. It's not the number of rushing yards, it's the number of *rushes*, according to Parcells. And that's why the Eagles were able to do what they did. They played some hard-fought football for a full 60 minutes. They didn't start celebrating until after that throw to Gronk was broken up and then everybody looked up and the game clock was at 0. And then... let's just say that I am very glad that, today, I do not work for any sanitation crew in Philadelphia. :)
