Title: Perpetual Weekend Thread
Post by: deanwebb on April 08, 2016, 08:45:29 AM
This thread exists to discuss any and all weekends, past, present, and future.

This weekend, I got fun stuff. Massage on Saturday and planning for my big vacations coming up.

First will be a big road trip 24 June-6 July. Two weeks' vacation used for that one. We'll drive from Dallas to Jackson, MS to Birmingham, AL to Atlanta to Greensboro, NC to Cincinnati to Nashville to Memphis. The theme is the history of the US Civil Rights movement, so we'll take in the sights related to that time period. Thanks to my Hilton points, we can line up a Hampton Inn in every town. Free breakfast erry day, yeah...

Next vacation is for my anniversary, around 1 August. Wife wants Las Vegas and who am I to say no? Boss approved both leaves, so I'm ready for some fun in the sun!

Sounds fun Dean. I'd love to see more of the US. I'm on a mission to test out all the breweries I can and my girlfriend wants to attend a baseball game in every MLB park. When we hit up Phoenix/Las Vegas in May we are going to see the Giants vs Diamondbacks. Which scores me a ton of points since she's a California girl and lifelong Giants fan.

Tonight e have a night out with some neighbors we do things with. Going to one of those places where you have to figure out all the clues to get out of the room, aptly named Escape Room. Then on to a Japanese restaurant to watch them cook our food. Love those places, actually I just love rice and meat. Of course we'll be enjoying some Saki and Japanese beers.

Tomorrow I'm re-building a retaining wall in the back yard and moving a bunch of rock around so I can lay some new sod. Sunday is my girlfriends birthday and we have tickets to the baseball game for the local University. And at some point I need to finish the crown molding I started.

Well,  I'm going to inventory my safety deposit box at the bank tomorrow. haven't been in it for like 10 years, so it will be an exciting adventure, have no idea what is in there. Filling the rest of my time with the Masters Golf tournament.

@deanwebb when you are in the Cincinnati area you will be in my neck of the woods.

I was planning on taking my son to his first MLB game (Cincinnati Reds) Sunday, but just found out we have to go to my sister-in-law's for a birthday party. :(

Cincinnati will be arriving 30 June, seeing sights 1 July, departing 2 July. Plan to eat at least once at Tom+Chee. We'll be visiting the Underground Railroad Museum there. I also just like Cincinnati a lot. I went there to grade AP Economics papers for a week, three years in a row. I'll also have to get some Skyline Chili in there, as well. I'm up for a meet-n-greet with the families, for sure!

I live about 60 miles southwest of Cincy (pretty much halfway between Cincy and Louisville). When it gets a little closer to those dates you should hit me up and maybe we could plan to meet for lunch or something while you are in the area.

I gotta disagree on the Skyline Chili. I have lived in the area for almost 20 years and I still hate the Cincy style chili. IMO chili is supposed to be hot not sweet. :)

Should get a ton or rain starting tonight.

This weekend is prepping for me being gone next week for my quarterly visit to Corporate in Pittsburgh and taking the blunt of kid duty so my wife can get some relaxation.

Work has been crazy busy and Im really hoping to not get called. Maybe I can just turn my phone off. Would any of you guys watch my CoC  base while Im off the grid?

Been raining the past two days, forecast is  rain through Monday, then a chance for showers through next Thursday,
Was hoping to get a lawn mow in, as I didn't last week,  guess the lawn will grow.

Also got to dig in the garden, was going to put up my tomato supports, but I thinks it's going to be too wet for that.
got to get them in the ground soon.

Got to change the air filters in the HVAC system, that's always a fun job.
Have you changed yours recently?

Title: Re: Perpetual Weekend Thread
Post by: deanwebb on April 29, 2016, 08:24:23 AM
Yeah, I need to do my filters... OK, I'll do it, I'll do it... Rain all day today, but it's supposed to clear out tomorrow, so I can do a little puttering about in my garden.

Memorial Day holiday weekend here in the US, unofficial start of Summer here, pools open, etc,.etc.etc. got to mow the lawn, and I've got a 4lb strip steak roast I'm putting in the smoker tomorrow, I'll be at the community pool sometime this weekend.  Got to do some electrical work too, one of my wall outlets shorted out last night, weird, only the top half, that''s connected to a wall switch. I'll need to find time to finish up my TSHOOT lab topology I've been building. did redistribution last night, it's almost done,  BGP and then the IPv6 stuff left to do.

Tension nahi lene ka, I'm in full India mode, after troubleshooting two different issues in India. Now I've got plans to see the release of "Kabali" when it hits the Indian theaters here in DFW.

Sadly, one issue is an ongoing major outage, so I may have to do things on Monday morning instead of holiday... I'll be sure to get the comp time later on, though!

Nope, not when discussing cinema. Bollywood is Hindi- and Urdu-language northern/western India, centered around film industry in Bombay (Mumbai now). Tollywood is Telegu- and Urdu-language for east central Indai, centered around Hyderabad film industry. Other south Indian cinema includes industries for Kannada, Tamil, and Malayalam languages. Then there is Pollywood, the Pakistani film industry in Karachi.

None of these should be confused with Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry in Lagos that churns out soap operas like nobody's business.

need to find some time to do some smoking Sunday, although it will be rather hot. I'm thinking bacon wrapped chicken thighs

Having a nice time now watching a documentary on storytellers. Sunday evening is the perfect time for quiet, contemplative topics... no worries about work or hassles.

But back to the storytelling... it's fascinating how so much of what we think is bland and unexciting in our own lives can be fascinating and emotionally connecting to others. When we find reasons, connections, and wisdom and share them with others, we create bonds that run deep. The stories we tell share our values and build bridges across generations and cultures. It's fascinating...

BIG weekend coming up in the USA... Global Megacorporation gives everyone the 24th of December to the 2nd of January off, so I don't roll up to work until the 3rd.

Today and tomorrow are very light days, as most everyone has already shuffled off for the holiday. I'm working from home, responding to emails, but not doing a lot of changing since there's a change freeze in place. Time to get some comp time back from that major system upgrade and the two major outages I had to work a few weeks ago...

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and a Happy Festivus to all. Those are my holidays, so those are the ones I'm wishing to everyone. Feel free to wish a merry or happy whatever it is you like to do at the December-January interchange. :)

Hey, waitaminit!

I like the Cowboys! And Steelers. And Patriots. And while I'd like the Falcons to win, I'm going to watch the game for the sake of the game and enjoy it if it's close, like the Pats-Seahawks 2 years ago. Last year's and the Broncos-Seahawks games were just runaway ridiculous and were pretty much over after the first 137 touchdowns scored by the winning team in each contest...

Speaking of weekends, all our members in the US government sector are still keeping an eye on the Congress... the stopgap funding bill just cleared the House and is likely to clear the Senate. It will keep the money taps turned on for another week, during which time Congress should hopefully pass a bill to keep the rest of FY 2017 funded.

Apparently I am going to review, and maybe update my resume this weekend (Thanks Dean, and Ristau). Also going diving this weekend. Will be my second dive after we got certified. SCUBA is so peaceful. Nobody can talk to you, you can't talk to anyone, and best of all there is no cell phone reception 40ft underwater.

Looking at my last post in this Thread I was supposed to get a blog post up. That never happened. I do have one on SNMPv3 95% done. I just need to spin up a linux VM so I can validate some syntax, and get screenshots. Maybe do that Sunday while watching football.

I get to go see my mother-in-law who is on her death bed and waiting to die.  She's been waiting to die for like 2 weeks now. Trying to starve herself to death. (Don't be sorry, it was her own choice to give up on life like she did. It is what it is)

now on to brighter thinks

canning tomatoes...again,
smoking my last NY Strip Steak roast. (w/applewood)

YAY I don't dave to go.  Wife decided she doesn't want to see her mother in that condition.

I plan to get more work done for my RSA proposal and enjoy some faster Internet getting installed today. Also need to study for my FSCA exam.
Finished my RSA proposal earlier this week and I just passed the FSCA exam. Looks like this weekend is going to be for taking it easy as a reward for my efforts.

I've got three kids over 14. One lives in an apartment on her own, one's in college and living quietly at home, and the youngest does a lot of stuff with her art, so we just stay out of her way and she keeps out of ours.

Once youngest is in college, then options for travel really open up.

I tell you what, after week 3, I decided that the teams playing this year are NOT the teams that played last year. I think after week 4, and for sure after week 5, we're going to have a clearer picture of which teams are playing *this* year. There will be teams with winning records, and then there will be teams with winning records, but with wins only against teams with losing records. If a team can consistently beat other winning teams, that's the one to truly reckon with.

Unless it gets a bunch of injuries, which is why picking GB v Dallas is so damn tricky this week... Dallas' defense recovers after some key players return from IR, and I'm pretty sure Dak and Dez had a come-to-Jesus meeting after the loss to the Rams. For its part, GB has had wins, but only just in some cases.

protip: VMware to KVM conversion is a pain especially if its your single home non-redundant DC. Vcenter basically stops working without the DC/DNS.... you gotta turn off your DC to copy the VMDK across..... Vcenter doesn't work so can't run the standard red hat v2v tooling etc....
Title: Re: Perpetual Weekend Thread

... which is why I'm just going to rebuild, not convert/migrate. Easier to demolish and clear the land than to try to do all those intricate repairs.
Title: Re: Perpetual Weekend Thread

I only lightbulbed recently re: Vcenter and AD: its the DNS and only the DNS (LDAP aside) that it cares about.
1 DNS container later, full vcenter operation using local account (non LDAP).
Now its backed up with AD primary and the container as the secondary.

You do sometimes learn more trying to convert/migrate. Either way getting Wintel to run on KVM has its own quirks/'vmware-tools' equivalents.

On other topics: docker all the things. You won't regret it.

The below is running the following:
- syslog
- dns
- plex
- openvpn
- docker web UI
- bittorrent sync
- smtp relay

Check the footprint.... then realise everything is nicely separated and ephermeral, I can fire up, upgrade, spin down at will with zero linkage or effects on each other or my base host system libraries or configs

Just joined this PC to the domain.

Working on cleaning up part of the garage, and the back porch. With the nice weather we want to sit out there, but it is pretty cluttered right now. Also need to get a new tire on my truck. UK is in lockdown again. Spoke to my friend there and he's planning on fixing up his house and his car. He recently got a classic truck imported from USA and he's just got it on the road.

I'm trying to make the most of the "not-in-lockdown-at-the-moment" phase we're in here in Australia. This weekend we had karts. I managed to come 3rd overall so I'm happy with that. I seemed to have one of the slowest karts but was able to move up in the results from 6th once I figured out the corners. There were far too many crashes by the others. I'm on the far left here with my two mates to the right of me. Everyone else is friends of friends. Was good fun

But are they? Last info I saw was the vaccine is only lasting for a few weeks so you'd need to be jabbed every few weeks to stay immunised. Might be OK for health care workers but I cant see that being viable for general public.
Title: Re: Perpetual Weekend Thread
Post by: deanwebb on November 10, 2020, 11:38:43 AM
Yeah, we don't yet know the longevity of the vaccine. If only a few months or less and if it requires elaborate storage systems, it's probably going to be hospital/government only for a while. On the other hand, those are the guys that need it most so that they can stay in the medical front lines.

I am in the same boat with my PTO. Like you I have Christmas to New Years already approved. I have two more days I have to take before the end of the year. I am probably going to take the week off before Christmas. COVID kind of messed up my plans. I was supposed to have gone to Florida earlier this year which would have put me under the PTO cap. Going to hold on to as much PTO as I can, and once this is over take a good long vacation somewhere. My company allows us to take up to 30 days in a row.

we have an extremely complex network environment, so we need to make sure people know how to do the job, have been doing it successfully for a month.
we put them on new ticket duty fairly quickly, then work them into the CM process, have them help, then as primary, after they've made successful network changes on their own. then they go into on-call rotation, for each of the 4 network duties that our group is responsible for. firewall, RA VPN, Authentication, and Web Filtering.

I used to work where the phone would ring, the level 1 guy would read, letter by letter, the IP address and name of the router interface that was flapping. Again. The on-call guy would say, "Acknowledge" and then go back to lunch or sleep, whichever was being interrupted. Unless the level 1 guy said, "no, need escalation." Then it was, "OK, email me the details" and then, whatever it was, we owned the escalation.

I *hated* getting the perimeter router calls... I'm a security guy, I wanted to fix everything with static routes. :smug:

Waiting for my replacement memory to show up for my laptop (hopefully the speed and voltage are right for my motherboard) so I can get back to Cities: Skylines building.

In the meantime, I'm doing a lot of CK3. It's a great game, and there are some unexpected surprises... like when my wife was looking over my shoulder as I was clicking around on leaders and we discovered at the same time how the Medieval Adamites were clothing-optional... there's some crazy nudity in that game, to go with all the royal incest and murder plots.

And by "crazy nudity", I don't mean loads of pr0n. I mean that people seem to go crazy and then, next step, clothes are off. Trust me, you do NOT want to see inbred naked smallpox victims... but I guess that's part of the charm of CK3. :smug:

Bahrain has been pleasantly cool this weekend. I took the old lady down to the farmers market yesterday to buy vegetables and we had a stroll on the grounds of an old Portuguese fort nearby. The night before we had a birthday celebration for one of my contractor friends. Dinner was awesome. Cowboy tomahawk steak, beef tongue appetizer, and habanero mac. Now I'm sitting on my couch having some wine and reading the news. Been a nice weekend and I still have another day off to look forward to.

Not gonna lie, my weekend is getting overshadowed by some issues at work. Sucks when that happens, but it happens. Meh.

Picked 3 of 4 winners in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs... going with Chiefs over Bills if Mahomes is good to go and I think that either Green Bay or Tampa Bay will win in their game. Total toss-up on that one.

OK, I'll cheer for the Green Bay team.

Kinda crazy awesome for Brady to have taken TB this far while Belichik did not get the Pats a ticket to the big dance. Makes me wonder how much of the Pats' dynasty was due to coaching...

*Edit* I was half asleep when I read the score. Packers lost.

Oh yeah, I gotta watch the finals of the Scotties. I love the curling! Got some young challengers in the mix with the previous champions, including the legendary Jennifer Jones. She's roughly the same age as Tom Brady, is looking for her 7th victory AND gave birth to children AND holds down a day job as a senior counsel for a bank. Mad props to the athletes who do it all!

Labor Day USA coming up soon. I'm taking Thursday and Friday off next week so as to have 5 days in a row, no work.

Planning on takin' it easy and playing some soothing video games. Not the harsh ones. The soothing ones. :D

This weekend I spent 3 days in a creek bed building a retaining wall to keep the creek from washing around the bridge and cutting off the driveway.  I barely looked at my phone all weekend.  Covered in mud and sand and sweat.  It was great.

Hey! So am I. Don't go back until December 1st. I don't have sewer line problems, but I am getting a new washer and dryer delivered this weekend. If it gets delayed I will have to play college kid, and take my laundry over to my parents house.

EPIC GRAVEDIG FOR END OF YEAR PTO 2022!!!!

Sewer line was fixed up nice last year, BTW. :smug:

Hope everyone on PTO, be it mandatory or voluntary, has a quiet holiday with no all-hands sev 1 conference calls because the devs won't reboot the Windows server unless they've put the network guys through hell testing everything else.

Gonna epic gravedig and just make this thread about stuff and things in general.

Big storm here last night, I'm all right as is my family and property. But it was a big ol' line of thunderstorms, I tell you what!

Taking a pair of sick days because I'm feeling run down from the last few weeks of travel and work and not having enough time for rest.

We have had some big windstorms off and on the last few weeks. One of the cabinets on the back side of the house tipped over, and broke up. Still need to clean up the parts. Luckily nothing important in it.

Wife is traveling for work this week so I get the place to my self. Using that time to build an O2 generator so I can make my own Nitrox for SCUBA. Getting it put together in the living room, and once I have it working I will take it up to my brothers place where the compressor is and mount it. Just need to get it done before Friday night.

Did my taxes today and got a noice refund because of solar panels.  :smug:

That will pay off some other home improvements at higher interest rates and I get a snowball running that way. (SNOWBALL: taking what was paid for one account that is closed out and applying it to the next one. Start with highest interest rates and work down. Best benefit is on accounts where paying off the principal early reduces total interest paid.)

My tax refund this year is kinda insane cuz I only worked half the year and I also got married.

Debt free since 2017 so I definitely condone getting out of debt and making regular extra payments on principal if you have a mortgage. We plan to buy a house and pay it off asap when the market stops being stupid.

Yes, I do, and it is becoming more and more desert every day with the lake drying up. There are still some places to dive near by. Nothing that comes close to the Caribbean, but still good enough. I didn't get the generator done. I was missing parts I thought I had. Hardware store helped out, but there are a couple items I had to order. Supposed to be delivered this week.

This is my last week at the old job. So this weekend will be filled with small get togethers with coworkers that couldn't get together during the week. Then the wife leaves for another work trip on Sunday night.

Good tip. This also reminded me to make sure I updated my email address here. I heard the other week that my old email provider is gone so even if I can remember my password for my old email account it no longer exists. Last year I had to get back into it to do a password reset on something.

Not the weekend, but I got my new Lego set delivered yesterday so time to put that together. It will take a few days, and then I need to figure out where I will display it. Has to stand up, and is 24" tall so it won't fit with the rest of em.

Bunch of guys at the office bought 1000+ piece lego sets to put together during an extended downtime  :XD:
