I have Adtran switches across my network. What we have found an issue with access when STP blocks a port in a specific instance.  The instance we found is when there is a loop in an unmanaged switch that is connected to the Adtran.(I know unmanaged switches are the devil and budget wise we are working to get rid of them.)  What happens is a user creates a loop in their office with the unmanaged switch and then the Adtran kills that link to the unmanaged switch. This is great because it stops the loop from hurting the network.  All the computers on the Adtran retain internet access and voip phones work fine.

Here is the weird part, when it blocks that port we lose all remote access to the switch. I have confirmed STP is blocking that port by consoling into the switch.  This only happens we are using QOS to expedite voip traffic. When we turn qos off the STP still blocks the port and we keep remote access.

I have tested this in a lab enviroment with not other traffic besides my computer and the loop in an unmanaged switch and the same thing happens. I have found when I weight the qos VOIP queue to 255 instead of expedited I keep access as well.

My question is this.  With VOIP do I need to keep the voip queue at expedited traffic or can I just leave at 255.(The other three queues are set to 25)

Second question is does anyone know why expediting COS vlaue 5 traffic in queue 4 is stopping remote access and pings during the loop.

Im sorry if this is dumb question but still learning all the voip ins and outs.  We are having some issues with the sound on our outbound calls being choppy.  The receiver has no issues hearing us though.  I pulled a wireshark capture and all the outbound streams are tagged correctly but the inbound streams are tagged at AF11.

My question is do I need to set up a map to tag that inbound traffic? I thought the sender was supposed to be tagging it on their end.

We have installed PRTG on our network recently and I was wondering if I set up a probe on one of our Layer 3 switches and let it mirror the uplink port what would be the long term effects?  Im assuming it would basically double the work the Adtran is doing.  Is this something that I can leave on at all times or should this only be done to troubleshoot in smaller windows.

We are looking at purchasing some Fiber Optic Power Meter and Light Sources to test the fiber on our campus.  We are using multimode fiber and do not have any runs over 100M long.   From what I can tell that means we would only be testing at the 850nm wavelength.  Is this correct. 

Also is the wavelength only determined by MM or SM fiber and the distance it runs? At what time would we need to test at 1300nm?

I work for a school and we have multiple campus with 20+ building per campus. We are looking at purchasing a couple of Ubiquiti nano-stations with the hopes that they will be able to serve as a temp back up connection whenever we run into issues connecting to buildings.  The buildings are close together with the largest space being maybe 100-200 yards.

My question is will these work through walls? Our hope is we can just hook this up in the closet of the nearest building and point it and connect it to the building that is down's closet.  Since it is close I was wondering if the signal will be strong enough to go through 3-4 brick walls.

Just wanted to update everyone. We purchased some Fiber optice microscopes and it was pretty clear the issue was the ends.  We put on new Unicam ends and everything has been great the last couple of days.

We are looking at buying some actually testing equipment. Does anyone have any recommendations on affordable OTDR's or OLTS sets?

Its about 1 200 meter pull using 1.25mm fiber.  And yes they are the same. We have used this exact setup at all of our 80 other switches and have not had any issues.

We moved it to some transceivers that run at 100 megs which is what the old equipment ran at and it seems to be fine now....even though its slow again.
So why does it stay up at 100 megs but drop AFTER a brief up period at 1 gig?

update:  The 100 meg transceivers just dropped too.

Good morning. I manage a network with about 90 switches all connected via fiber.  I have one switch that is giving me issues.  It will stay up for about an hour then go down.  We have tried replacing all the hardware on both sides and there is no difference the only thing that seems to help is when we clean the end, it will work for a little bit then drop again.  Could there be some oil or dust that lets it connect then interferes with the traffic and kills the connection?   Any ideas?

We do not manage the Juniper and are wanting to slowly phase everything off of it to our Cisco. We are turning up a new site and want this to be the first one we phase over.

Good morning. We have a Juniper firewall provided by our ISP and then we also have a Cisco ASA that runs beside it on its on public IP that we are wanting to move the IPSec connections over too.  My issue is that when I set up the Ipsec tunnel access to the LAN works fine but anyone connecting through the tunnel has issues connecting to the internet.  Is there a way to Tunnel users in through the Cisco ASA and then have them use our Juniper wirewall for all internet traffic?

I am setting up monitoring through PRTG with our newly purchased Adtran switches. My issue I am having is that alot of the thing in the Adtran MIB documentation do not show up in the Adtran switches. Primarily there are traps missing.  Do I have to upload the MIB to the Adtran? or do some switches just not support all the traps? The firmware is up to date and is actually newer than the documentation recommends.

Alot of the cables run to unused wall jacks and my boss wants to keep those 'hot'. But there are tons that I am sure are just laying un-used in the ceiling and those are the ones I want to track and put into use or at least map for the future.

Hey everyone. I started at my current job and I manage the network for about 5 campuses and 15 remote sites. I took over for what 3 people before have set up. 

My problem is that we have multiple closets that have entire patch panels filled up and ready to use, but I have no idea where the majority of those wires run too.  It has gotten so bad that we have patch panels that are completley punched down but only have a couple or ports in use and then bundles of extra cable running into the switch right beside them.  I would like to know where those un-used cables that are already punched down, run too so that we can put them to use and stop running extra cable when its not needed.  Do anyone know of any tools to simply tracking those cables outside of climbing into the ceiling?
