Security / Re: 2nd router behind first
September 27, 2023, 08:44:50 PM
No I dont know if someone else has done that.  I have 3 or 4 old routers already and no pie.  My LAN IP's starts at 192.168.4.2 so Im assuming that I would use DHCP and start LAN adresses like 192.168.5.2 router being 5.1, on the second router  or could I still use 192.168.4.100 (4.99 is where my existing router leaves off)
So your thinking that once a VPN is established through a router you cant have a second VPN (tunnel) through the existing VPN.

Security / 2nd router behind first
September 26, 2023, 03:14:23 PM
Im using Surfshark VPN on one computer on my nework.  The VPN has a software Kill Switch so when it drops the VPN it cuts traffic to my computer.  It works ok but Didnt one time now Im nurvous.  I was going to install the VPN on my Linksys router but it does not have that option.  i dont want to flash with 3rd party software so.
Can I install an older 2nd router just for my computer thats flashed with something like DD-WRT or Tomato then install Surfshark on that for a little extra security in case my VPN drops on my compter
Thanks
Rick

I dont see how the streaming service would know that we are sharing as we still would be on the same WAN address.
I can share the drive and see it but if I seperate the two 192.168.4 and 192.168.5
The other router wont be able to see the drive

Routing and Switching / Best way to implement
June 27, 2023, 01:42:27 PM
I'm going to share my internet with my neighbor.  We already have a cat 5 cable between the two homes.  We each have accounts with Google Home (speaker) and a smart home hub for smart home devices.  We don't want to be able to see each other's devices or speakers in the respective apps.
I was thinking my router will be 192.168.4.1 and Ill install a router next door with 192.168.6.1.  Would that do it
Thanks

Routing and Switching / Device with static IP
June 05, 2023, 06:11:01 AM
I have a device that I programmed with a static IP 192.168.5.?.  Yesterday I replaced the router.  The new routers IP is 192.168.6.1.  When I look at the connected devices I don't see my device I'm assuming that's because I was using IP'S 192.168.5.xx range now it's 192.168.6.xx range.
How do I connect to that device when I can't remember the static IP

My router or access point cant do that.  So in order for this to work were talking about hardware?

Security / Push notification

would like to be able to get a push notification on my android phone when someone connects to wifi.  A notification would have to list the name of the device trying to connect.
Is there any 3rd party software that will do this
Thanks

Routing and Switching / Re: Forwarding a port
February 12, 2021, 12:43:56 PM
Ok thanks guys for your help.  I learned a bunch
I used Wireshark and a Telnet app on my android phone (Termius)  I was able to capture packets so the connection or port was getting through so I started to look at the app on my phone that is supposed to transmit data when I come into my Geo-Fence there is a setting there I can either use Google or PathSense (Im not sure what those do) I changed from default Google to PathSense and its working
Great
Have a good day

Routing and Switching / Re: Forwarding a port

This is what i did
Like you suggested I created a hot spot and connected with my latptop.  I first typed in telnet then open WAN IP 55555    It just hung on connecting
Then I typed in telnet WAN IP 55555  the screen went blank and you suggest that its connected to my server but I still dont get a response (nothing happens) in the program thats running on my server.
I guess since Ive proved that my laptop is getting through to my server then its an issue with the program im using on my server

Thanks, Dieselboy
The app is for location (EventGhost) so the phone is not on the network so I point the app to my WAN ip address and thats y I need the port forwarding.  So I used your netstat and it said it was listening and when I used your Telnet (on another computer) the screen goes black so do I assume that I'm connected to the computer.  I guess I should try the same thing from another location

Routing and Switching / Forwarding a port
February 04, 2021, 06:25:25 PM
I have an app on my android phone that's supposed to send info to a program running on a local computer
In the app, I've filled in the WAN IP and the port
On my router, I've used port forwarding to forward TCP port 55555 to an IP on my network.
It's not working.
I don't know how to diagnose the problem
I use Norton on Windows 10 I've made sure that Norton is not blocking the port
Any ideas
