I encountered what I thought was odd behavior when upgrading a small 2 node 3750x stack at a client this week. I added the new IOS .bin files to flash1: and flash2: and issued the boot command pointing to the new IOS, hit the reload and bam... 30 min reboot times.. I jut got to the stack and consoled into the master in time to see the liscense information to roll across my terminal session..

I'm not sure what happened but I verified the correct IOS .bins were loaded and running. did some quick testing and everything was fine..

is this expected behavior? I've never updated a stack - I did it manually, so maybe that caused this extended boot?

Some of the IOS upgrades included microcodes upgrades, which take a very long time.  30 minutes is about normal when you bump in to those, sometime around 12.2(58) there was one released.  It's also common to hear your fans going crazy on some platforms when these types of upgrades are being performed.

If you were on the console, you'd see things like:  "Front-end Microcode IMG MGR: Programming device 0..."

I do recall the fans going

I'll research that. I need to perform a couple more updates on non-stacked 3750x's at remote sites..

Thanks for the info!!

Indeed. Also, it's one-time only. If you downgrade to 12 and upgrade to 15 again, it won't happen a second time.

12 to 15 really made for some anxious moments here, even with the warning that it would be around 40 minutes to do the upgrade...

Yeah, try doing this upgrade to an outpatient childrens rehabilitation facility at 9pm...  :'(

plot twist.. when I was racing around trying to find the MDF at this multi-level facility with my laptop I discovered the 80k square foot abandoned medical floor of this facility. which is where the MDF happened to be... it was zombie apocalypse central! after everything was up I spent a good 20 minuets walking around with the master key looking at all these abandoned rooms with medical equipment, drop ceiling falling down and lights flickering.. It was awesome! It took a bunch of photo's.

Just like everyone else said. It takes forever. It still makes me nervous when doing remote upgrades with no console.

Just to add to the pile... These things take forever to boot.  I upgraded a stack of 2x 3850 this morning and it took 15 minutes to go from 3.2.3 to 3.3.5.  I was fortunate to have OOB management to watch it boot, but it can certainly be heartstopping as it upgrades firmware.
