Rick and Morty - What Kind of Networkers Are They?

I'm watching the episodes, largely because of Wintermute's avatars... and I realized that Rick is pretty much a Network Security guy. Always suspicious of everything, always ready to kick himself when he trusts someone else, always ready to shut everything down in the name of keeping things safe. That's my man, that Rick!

So now I wonder, what about Morty, Summer, Beth, and Jerry? What's their specialty?

I already know that Mr. Meeseeks is a temp contractor. Does some amazing stuff and then, poof!, he's gone.

Back to the main characters... I'd say that Morty reminds me most of a L1/L2 guy who thinks he's ready for the big time routing and switching, but doesn't even know that he doesn't even know OSPF, let alone BGP. He's sick and tired of racking and stacking, but he's barely ready to use static routes.

Summer doesn't want to be bothered, most of the time. Good signal matters to her and if the underlying network is running, she doesn't care what's keeping it running. Definitely a Voice/Video person.

Beth can really do some amazing stuff, even if some of her special skills aren't in demand all the time. She also keeps everything together, more or less, even if she has to drink heavily to do it. She's the operations WAN engineer, also in charge of the link balancers and WAN accelerators.

Jerry is the idiot that BS'd his way into being the wireless engineer. We're so lucky that stuff works most of the time, because by Season 3,
we're totally calling him on his crap
. He has the most conflict with Rick, the security guy, because he has no idea how RADIUS or 802.1X works and Rick pretty much has to do his job for him. Jerry will either get fired or into management.

If you agree or disagree, discuss. Feel free to bring up other characters. Don't hesitate to use spoiler tags for season 3 stuff, since it's not all done as of the time of this posting.

And thanks to Wintermute for getting me into the series.

Haha no problem. Greatest show ever and that's no exaggeration in my book

It really does have the emotional punch of Breaking Bad, which I did not expect. I have always wanted to see the guys saving the universe go through PTSD and stuff like that. This delivers.

#3
Watched the 1st episode and it had some good parts, but didn't really get into it.  Then I was working a night shift and was looking for something to keep me awake, and found a youtube channel streaming it... and I got hooked.

Rick is an old school linux guy with 20 years XP in it, doing it cause he can and screw the establishment.  He has a bad attitude and poor people skills, but he has a system in place that works reasonably well, and he always pulls everyone's ass out of the fire (or at least a reasonable simulation of it) even if it was his fault they were there to begin with.

I would say Morty is a low wage helper.  Can't do much on his own, but manages to pull Rick out of the fire on occasion and gets no thanks. Constantly reminded of his own short comings.  Hates the life and victimization it brings him, but he just can't find a good way to leave.  He knows just enough to know he is forever out of his league, and it terrifies and humiliates him.

Jerry is a project manager no doubt.  Can't actually do anything on his own and the only way he survives is by looking pitiful so people help him. All the while he tells himself that he is doing great work and people can't get by without him.

Beth is the boss.  She has control over the group other than her lead admin, and she is desperate that he stay.

Summer is the intern.  She is on the outside looking in on the admin team.  She hears all the stories of the work R/M do and she wants that.  But she doesn't really understand it, the horrible things that come along with that responsibility, or her own short comings.  All she hears is Morty crying about how horrid it is while hearing these amazing stories.

I just got caught up myself during lunch.

Summer does NOT get paid enough for that stuff, I agree.
