Should I move for a 30% salary increase?

In the March 19, 2019 Ask The Headhunter Newsletter a reader asks whether a big salary increase is enough reason to accept a job offer. Question A rival company has offered me a job with a 30% salary increase. I know there are other things to consider, but it’s such a big pay bump that I think it may be sufficient reason to move. Should I accept it? Nick’s Reply Only if money is your prime motivator. If it is, go for it. Of course, without any other information, I can't really give you very thoughtful advice. I once made a move for a 44% increase. What I learned is that every job has Pro's and Con's. Organizations change, bosses come and go. No employer ever has your best interest at heart. At the end of the day it is a business decision and if an employer needs to for whatever reason will shaft you without a second thought. What I took from my experiences is that never be loyal to an employer because an employer CANNOT ever be loyal to you. It is just how business works and is not personal.

Moral of the story? Always look out for yourself and your family first and foremost which normally means taking the money. Money is the hardest form of compensation to modify once you are hired. PTO, flex time, bonuses, etc are all easier to get/modify after being hired than straight salary. Take the money and figure out the rest later. If a job doesn't work out because of "terrible boss/etc) then take the money from somewhere else and move on. Not personal, it is business.

Counter:

It's not about the money, it about personal satisfaction and the enjoyment you get out of life and your job.  if making $22K/yr US as a public social services office assistant, makes one happy, and fills life desires by helping other people. Then consider that person may be better of than you.

My view is if I'm paid more, I'm likely to be more tolerant of stupidity. If I'm paid less, life's too short to stick around for that BS.

remember though,  money resolves one issue, and one issue only, that issue is a lack of money.
and adds more stress and worry about how to maintain wealth.

Am I getting too philosophical?

Not too philosophical if you make mention of health insurance coverage. :smug:

I know that's not an issue outside the USA, but it's a big deal here in the States.
