I made a boo-boo - HP Procurve

About 5 years ago the company I worked for were buying HP Procurve switches for use in very basic installs. Perfect for DMZ switches where you just need switching, VLANs and management capabilities as well as some level of STP for resilience.

So I ordered a couple of 1620 Procurves, as I had previously used 1610's, 2510's and 2520s. But HP have done some acquisitioning and it doesn't even look like the old Procurve anymore from the CLI and web. The old procurve you could basically configure like a weird Cisco switch. You entered config mode, and done your stuff. Once you knew your way around you could very easily configure it like a basic Cisco 2960.

This 1620 is good for the bin!

Is it that unusable? I've manager 2510's I believe. Surely a 1620 is doable? I hope it at least has an ASIC...

No ProCurve OS? They do look to at the very bottom of the range... I was looking at some 2620 switches earlier but they are all branded Aruba-HPE now and I couldn't find any specifics on the operating system. Must say that the information I did find was very basic overall, just the number of ports, poe and throughput. Nothing like the booksized data sheets on the Cisco site...

I assume it has an ASIC!

I ended up calling HP to ask them what's happened and they recommended some of the higher end switches to do what I want. 2920 was the model.
I can and will use these switches. Once I have it configured how I want I plan on exporting the config, changing some bits in the text file and uploading it to the secondary.
But comparatively, previous 1610 procurve models gave you a Cisco-like CLI. They were cheap, just like the one's I have here so they were perfect for a very basic role. If you have to spend a few thousand bucks on a 2920 to get SSH and CLI access then might as well get a 2960.

When I tried to find out more about the HP Procurve I did notice some "HP Procurve Aruba" stuff.

Disappointing really.

I wonder what would happen if I try and install some older 1610 code onto this new switch :)
