This is why we need IPv7, with a 2048-bit address space that also serves as a device's public key.

As mentioned in another thread, it's already impacting security for certs that expire after 19 Jan 2038.

I expect the biggest panic to hit CIOs in a wave starting in 2033, when some of them finally get around to auditing systems. Biggest worries will be for manufacturing systems that still have a 32-bit field... someone will have to shut down production to update those guys, and you know how firms *hate* to shut down prod...

OK, new joke... a former database admin quits IT and gets a job as a lumberjack. On the first day, he cuts down trees in an O-shaped pattern. Second day, goes to a different forest, cuts trees in an O-shaped pattern. Third day, another site, another big O.

Manager asks the former database guy what's going on. Database guy says,

CIRCULAR LOGGING!

^ Then you might like my follow-up...

Fourth day, the former DBA goes to where he plans to cut trees, but he cancels cutting his big ring there. Manager asks why, and the former DBA says, "There's a tree whose branches go right across where I want to cut."

"So? Just cut that tree, too!"

"No, I can't."

"Why not?"

"Because SPANNING-TREE PREVENTS LOOPS!"
