Stacking switches

I have one query-
When I'm forming stack with 8 or less switches, then what packets they exchange among themselves to know all the switches in stack are alive and how frequent? Basically what type of packet exchanged between master switch and other members.
Please revert.

That last one indicates the switches are using SSO to communicate and goes into detail about the L2 and L3 nature of that protocol.
