Fed is closed early today in DC, due to major blizzard predicted, >2' is the current estimate with gusts to 40mph,
I'll see if I can get some pictures to post, this shuld be a good one.
We're all hunkering down until the power goes out, then hunker down more.
I'd rather get 2' of snow than .5" of ice like predicted in the southern US  areas.
wish me luck.

LUCK!

And who'd-a-thunk the Carolina game would be an ice bowl this weekend?

Luck! :)

Why will the power go out?

I might go and get in the pool. Had the A/C on most of today and it's still 32c / 90F at 7pm. Pool is cool and takes a few mins for me to get in because I'm a wimp.
It did rain this morning, though. It was warmer than it is now and there was lightning but it only lasted 5 or 10 mins then clear skies. I was wondering what could happen with all that hot air and cool rain.. From my office in the city I have seen rotation on clouds, and the centre dip down into a V but it never takes and shortly after you see this it kind of blows over and flattens out again. I don't know enough about it to understand what's going on though.

power goes out due to above ground electrical wires, they get heavy with snow and high winds blow them down.

picture is from this morning, out the basement window, I estimate 18 - 24 " with another 8 - 13" predicted for today

It was up to my knees when I dug the morning dog path.

Dieselboy: That there is what you call a funnel cloud. You get them when you're about to have a tornado. Don't ever mess around when there's a tornado. We drill on tornado safety about twice a year here, at least.

Ristau: Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang that's a lot of snow.

here is one of the neighbors back deck, you can tell a bit of wind and some drifting

I was up to my crotch in the afternoon bird feeding......

I did dig out with the snow thrower this afternoon, estimate 21" with 36" drifts,  snow thrower wasn't happy but pulled through.
Streets still have not been plowed,  word has it that we got plowed in by the county and special hardcore equipment was called in to dig through the 8' pile blocking the neighborhood entrance.

there's a little bit of he neighbors back desk on the first picture to the upper right,

How long before your streets get plowed clear?

Wow man. I've never seen snow that high. Be safe.

Here's some footage of my security camera from back home in England, and me leaving home in some snow in my Toyota.

Yep! They do happen here but rarely. One ripped through a suburb when I first came here in 2012 and took tiles off the roofs of 4 or 5 houses! It was horrific.. Actually I only saw it on the news and no one was injured.
What I described before was almost a daily occurrence, but never any progress further. I'm moving back to the city for work so more than likely get more pictures in the winter months. I did take a good photo and post on a oz weather website but they never acknowledged it. May be it's a common thing, I don't know.

We got lucky (if you don't like snow) as the system went too far south and we only got 3-4 inches out of the whole thing.
