Faceplates

I'm sure I'm just showing my naivety here, but what's the fascination with selling cisco faceplates on ebay? Are people wearing them out? Are they taping them to the front of netgear switches so they can be cool in front of their friends? I've seen them for years and years now and have always wondered.

Faceplates break and sellers want to get the most bang for their buck will want to have their product look as close to new as possible. It's a perception thing.
