... and I don't think the higher-ups are entirely aware of the fact... About to have fun times getting a ton of work until someone realizes we need more folks doing stuff and things.
Take a baseball bat and trash all the routers, shout out "IT'S A NETWORK PROBLEM NOW, SUCKERS!" and then peel out of the parking lot in your Ferrari.

Good luck.  We have been trying to add a Senior Network Engineer for about a year.  I think we might be getting someone in about 3 weeks.  My luck, they will get hit by a bus on the way to work their first day.

I'm all for growing people internally and hiring seniors out of the helpdesk guys that show a talent for walking and chewing gum at the same time.

hmm.
My sys.admin handed in his notice before I went on leave last week.
Our other sysadmin / dba is on leave for a month now as of today.

I have people asking me, can I build/install/set up all these servers. I said "I'm more than happy to try". Basically if there's documentation there I can probably work through it but I'm still only a collaboration/data engineer!

End of the week in 45 mins.... ... tick, tock :)

our team lead gave notice a few days ago, leaves 3 of us at the local site, 5 in total, where there used to be 10 on the team,
I guess that's a sinking ship for you....

Ouch... if you're doing double the work, then they need to hire on new guys.

For sure. Back when I was a net admin in the desert we mentored a help desk guy as he was going for his CCNP. Last I heard he is the network lead out at the regional NOC now.

Sad thing is, some firms have a zero tolerance policy for hiring contractors, no matter how well they've done things. They require hiring only other full-timers, no exceptions. It's a ludicrous policy to have, but some HR genius thought it up and now there are a lot of departments that do it that way. Utter nonsense, I say.

You have no Idea. In my department we have Networking/telecommunications. My manager quit, our only phone guy quit, and now our network admin is quitting. There is me, and a new guy....

2 people for a 5000+ user company.
Sys Admin: "You have a stuck route"
            Me: "You have an incorrect Default Gateway"

I was about to reply abut 3 hours ago... and then stuff happened.

If you have 2 for a 5000 company, we should have 60 for a 150,000 company.

I know we don't even have full staff for the 30 we're earmarked for. That, and the 3-hour gap of stuff hitting fans near me, would indicate to me that we are no longer *about* to be understaffed. We *are* understaffed...
