Every now and then, our bosses approve our PTO request and we have some days off to enjoy.  8)

Staying at home is easy: do stuff around the house, mess around in the lab, sleep late, stuff like that. Nobody seems to need tips on how to stay home.

But sometimes, we asked for those days off because we wanted to go somewhere. I recently took the family up to Boston and had a great time. We bought a city pass and the cost of the pass was less than the cost of admission to all the stuff we did. I really enjoyed the whale-watching trip into Boston Harbor, the Peabody-Essex Museum, Plimoth Plantation, and Lexington and Concord. Great fun with American History.

So, where are the places you're thinking of going to? Will you be taking an extra day or two on a business trip for yourself, or will this be a proper vacation, from start to finish?

Wife and I are currently looking at going to either Aruba or Costa Rica in the fall.

Tried to swing an extra day at Cisco Live so I could go diving, but I couldn't make it work. Trying to figure out when we can take some time to go to either HI again, or FL, but we don't know when that will happen.

Doing resorts or going on your own adventures there?

Resort is required for travel with the wife lol. I am the more adventurous one.

I'm lucky in that my wife likes to dive into the local scene. We love to get a hotel either right downtown or right next to the metro that's a few stops from downtown.

Barcelona and Amsterdam are both places I'd like to go to, mostly for the architecture in both.

Amsterdam is by far one of my favorite cities. I haven't been to Spain since I was a wee lad of 23, but it's a place I'm interested in going back to now that I know a thing or two about a thing or two.

I will be in the Philippines over Christmas/New Years, probably rambling between Manila, Subic/Olongapo and Angeles. Some old buddies of mine from the contracting days are coming out to make a trip of it. "Should be a hoot," as my buddy said.

Please don't mistake my experience for intelligence.

If you are ever on the "other" side of the world I recommend Macau. I wouldn't fly around the world just to go there, but anytime a business trip has me "near by" I drop in for an extra day or two.

Bali - stay in a villa. Full relaxation mode.

Iceland - enjoy the food and atmosphere. Do some exploring. I didnt get to go to the blue lagoon because it was booked up. So we took a 4x4 tour instead and saw some amazing sights. The black sand beaches as well as the mountains and snow. The 4x4 jeeps are huge.

England - get a ride out in the country. Not on a main road, on a real country lane that just winds around all over the place.

I'm going to uk end of november to see family. When I was living there, our Sundays were usually taken up by a drive in the country or to a park (which are huge) to walk the dog then followed by a stop at a nice pub for drinks and lunch.

I really like Dorking, Surrey. Actually, was watching a movie a few months ago with my gf whos Indonesian and I said to her that parts of the movie looked just like this place. It bugged me so much I googled it and found that yes it was Dorking. Movie is "The Holiday" and has Cameron Diaz in there.

Also liked going to this place, sometimes there would be wakeboarders on the lake. Nice to get out in the countryside (in the summer):

If you are going to the UK make sure you don't miss the Bude Tunnel.

Lol wtf?  ;D ;D ;D ;D
It's just one of those shelters they have outside supermarkets to keep the wind and rain off people when they're walking to / from the entrance  :XD:

It must be a joke with reviews like this one

I had a few hours in Minnesota before I got to the hotel. Drove out to see the world's largest ball of twine made by one man (as featured in the Weird Al song).

Yep.

It's a big ol' ball of twine, right there on Twine Ball Lane.
