Will a bad credit report cost you a job?

In the November 26, 2019 Ask The Headhunter Newsletter a reader questions the value of a credit report when judging a job applicant. Question Is a credit report from the big three credit reporting agencies (e.g., Experian) a good proxy for determining if a job candidate would be a security risk? Should a candidate be given the opportunity to explain and provide background about any items on a credit report that may appear as a negative to a potential employer? Or, should the credit check stand as a pass/fail test that a potential employer uses to determine if a candidate

I didn't even know they did this for "normal" jobs. I know jobs that handle large amounts of cash do it because of the theft risk, but that seems kind of shitty for other jobs.

its a test of trust.  if loaner trusts you to pay them back, when they loan you 10K and you fail to do so, this credit score tells the employer if you can't pay your debits, you can't be trusted to do the job.  IMO of course.

Both my last job offers were conditional on the credit check.
