Nick’s take I love this topic. Washington crows about low unemployment, but nobody in government seems to worry that your wage growth sucks. “Explanations” get tossed around like dry leaves whipped up by a forest fire: It’s the trade war, productivity, low inflation. I’ve got a simpler answer: Successful companies don’t share the wealth with their employees because it just feels better to keep the money. Job candidates need to push back harder. I these days, where a PHD physicist, can't get a job in his field, due to the job markets, job competition, ends up working at a Starbucks or Home Depot just to pay some bills.   They'd take a job in their field at any price.

In the contracting world, the lower you can pay someone, the more it increases profit on the project. so contactor charges $250/hr and pays someone $125/hr. that's free money. less benefits and stuff.

or company charges $250/hr to the client, the contractor pays someone $100/hr., the sub-contactor pays someone $75/hr., and the sub-sub-contactor pays someone $50.00/hr to do the actual work. everyone wins except the poor dude doing the actual work.

Exactly. I'm in Chile right now, where there are massive demonstrations every night because of those wealth inequalities. At least in IT, there's potential for more money, even if it's often more money elsewhere.

But then you get billed at a higher rate, so someone somewhere is still getting money for nothing.
