For those of us that have to travel...

What are your experiences with loyalty programs? Which ones are good? Which ones aren't worth the bother?

For me, I'm real happy with the Hilton HHonors program and since I have to go to India soon, I set up an Emirates program and tied it to my Sheraton membership, since they offer an alliance deal.

Hilton HHonors and Hyatt are my two hotels. I was suggested the Chase Sapphire for all purchases as it has a great rewards program. These two have been a life saver for all these CCIE attempts :)

I have an Emirates and Qatar account but it's too new to provide any benefits yet.

I feel like there are too many hotels out there to be loyal to just one chain. Good airlines, on the other hand, are few and far between. I prefer middle eastern carriers over US and European.

Please don't mistake my experience for intelligence.

Quoted for very truth. Also Singapore Air is awesome, even in coach. I can also recommend JAL.

Citi Hilton products are going away as of 1 January 2018. I'm going to have to convert to an Amex for Hilton. Since I'll be doing more travel from an American Airlines hub (Dallas), I'm looking at a Citi AA card.

I'm also looking at cards with annual fees, as they have some bonuses that will go nicely with increased travel... my wife being very interested in upgrades to business class for future trips overseas. The annual fee is a pain until you realize that if you're using that brand a lot, it makes sense.

I'm not yet traveling enough to need the $450 fee AA card with automatic Admirals' Club membership, but we'll see...

Hilton Honors here as well but I only just signed up. I'm new to these programmes. Our company has a HHonors membership and the Hilton in Sri Lanka always take good care of us when we're there. Because of that I stayed with the Hilton in Iceland when I was there in Feb and again they really did look after us there also.

We have Qantas and Emirates points schemes, but I've not seen any benefits yet :) Although Qantas have ways of getting more points. I got a sim only contract in February and received 8000 points. They're doing life insurance and are giving 100,000 points for signing up which seems like a ton.

HHonors is moving off of Visa and over to American Express... and the points per dollar spent increase with that move.

Update... I'm traveling enough to where I'm able to keep up both a Hilton and a Marriott loyalty program. I'm now on cards for both with an annual fee so that I can accrue points faster, which translates into more free hotels for vacation or when my family needs to travel.

The Hilton card, being AMEX, can't be used everywhere, but that's what my Marriott card is for. :smug:

On the other hand, the Hilton card is the one that has automatic Gold status, no matter what, and can get me to diamond status faster. I need to spend some more time looking over the Marriott rewards structure and how to cash in on that, since it's kinda new for me and I kinda got it because sometimes the Marriott hotel is closer to the customer than the Hilton hotel...

I guess I answered in a hurry before. So as a more accurate answer...

I use HHonors, IHG, and SPG depending on what company region I am going to. I also do all my business expenses on a southwest card so that I get lots of free flyer points for my wife and I to use.

One thing that gets me about Marriott is all the tiers and getting elite or not... it's pretty complicated. With Hilton, it's get the points, then use the points. Your level is what it is, no other stuff about it.
