Ok so get this our developers didn't budget for time to get SNMP working in their apps, so the routers have to report their state.

We will be writing EEM scripts that monitor OIDs, if an OID for X gets a value of 2 then the EEM script activates and builds and IP SLA that sends a udp ping on port 90 (example).  When the OID goes back to a value of Y another EEM sript takes off and the IP SLA gets taken out.  They are trying to figure out how many of these we will need.

The routers will also have to send keep alives to the device.

Take a baseball bat and trash all the routers, shout out "IT'S A NETWORK PROBLEM NOW, SUCKERS!" and then peel out of the parking lot in your Ferrari.

Oh, what did they used to say when I was in the military.....

Yeah... that was it.

Be sure to bill back their project with your time. Have them approve the internal PO before you start work.

..and I need an approved Change Request and an implementation plan before you start...  - :problem?:

Actually, that's a very good point. What's their plan if this SNMP stuff breaks the network? Your backout plan is to rollback the changes. What's theirs?

Most certainly need to be worked out in the lab.

Pretty much everything I do is lab, we are a product testing shop

That's fantastic!

A developer said she had a problem with some software on her Mac the other week. I said that's weird, did you reboot? Answer was no. So I said reboot and see if it's fixed. She says okay... and then reaches over and holds the power button down until the thing dies. And then presses the power button again to turn it on. I just walk away in amazement. Software issue was resolved, though.

Had another interview for "technical lead" in Sri Lanka. He complained he couldn't join the webex interview and sent a screenshot of the problem, which HR forwarded to me. The screenshot had an error that said "Java not installed or is not working properly". So I read this out to the HR girl and explained that he didn't have Java installed or it is not working with his browser. Try another browser. All of this was relayed, he tried Firefox and he joined the webex interview.
In my opinion, if tech roles get stuck at things like that then there is no point continuing on with the interview. Just like most of our developers who develop software, report software issues to me and they have not even tried quitting the software and re-opening it, or have not tried rebooting. I'll agree we shouldnt need to do that at all, but I'm not a software person and know if you have a problem, close and re-open it.

Another developer - said a folder has gone missing from her laptop that was shared with her. I said tell me the location of if and I'll search the backup and restore it. She said she didn't know the location. I flukily found it on a backup.
