I am trying to figure out if this Supervisor card support 8-10Gb ports off of it or if I am going to need to purchase an additional 10Gb line card for uplinks from IDF switches to it.  This would be installed in a WS-C4506-E.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-4500-series-switches/data_sheet_c78-728191.html

If it does in fact support 8-10Gb uplinks to it, would there be a reason not to use the Supervisor card for this reason?  Our floor IDF switches are going to be WS-C3850-48U-L stack with an C3850-NM-2-10G installed (in the first and last switch).  These would dual-connect to a the WS-C4506-E I spoke of above in a SUP8E as DIST01 and another WS-C4506-E with a SUP8E as DIST02.

Thanks

I am not an expert on the 4500 series, but the way I read that as long as you don't use the wireless capabilities, and only have one Sup per chassis all 8 ports are available, and are non-blocking. However, the backplane is only 48G on the 4506E chassis so if a lot of the traffic is going to another line card you will have a bottle neck there.

If it is a major concern just call Cisco, or your VAR and ask.

My personal opinion has always been to not use sup ports if at all possible. However they are there so you might as well use them. Rarely used the 4500's but on the 6500/7600's I've used them with no issues.

I got clarification from my Cisco SE (as well as many of you here) that they are in fact all available unless you are doing wireless on them.  Thanks for everyone's replies.
