Dude, pack your spam up and leave.

Also, nice work on the 90's-style computer graphcis.

Moved the spam to a new thread. Edited the links so that they either go nowhere or to a site that is pertinent to our interests: this way, we don't host links and make search engine bots think they need to start trending that MLM crap.

As for how the guy got in, it's obvious. It's not a robot, but it's a guy. The first level of security here is to defeat bulk algorithm-driven spam and a little bit of human-driven spam. The spam that gets through will be from people, quite possibly hired by the hundreds and thousands in places like Turkey, Morocco, Mexico, Lebanon, and other places where there is a lot of poverty but also a lot of Internet access. Other jobs offered up to desperados like that include content filtering for Facebook, guys that pad out follower counts on LinkedIn, and the like.

That they get through the first line is not a huge worry from a security standpoint, at least not yet. Currently, the second-level of defense is in our moderation system: edit the links, public shaming, dropping the banhammer on the poor sap, these are all tools at our disposal. Should the correlation of first posts to spam increase, then we can just institute a policy of requiring that first post to be moderated... that, or require all accounts to be approved by admins/mods and that they respond to an email registration component. It's a hassle for real humans that want to network with actual networkers and not participate in MLM scams, but increased security will translate to a decrease in ease of use. Whether it's a human or a network device that bears that decrease only determines how obvious that decrease will be to end-users.

Guarantee you though, random characters in the username and links to MLM crap translate into one thing: SPAM. I've been burned on other forums by those types, so they don't have a first chance here. Farewell, Mr. A1d4nj, but I decided to launch my monologue *after* I offed your account.

Follow on note... user's email changed to abuse@bt.com, since those are the people that provided him with the Internet access, and I'm not about to let a search engine bot start trending a spammer's email on account of recent activity on our forums.

Can't we just delete the post and ban the user? Most of these are hit and runs right

We could. But I wanted to make an example of this one.

Btw I was searching for the banhammer and epicfail. Do you have any instructions for where the moderator buttons are?
